1.1 Who is ISHR and what is the ISHR Academy?

The International Service for Human Rights (ISHR)

The International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) is an independent, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. We achieve this by supporting human rights defenders, strengthening human rights systems, and leading and participating in coalitions for human rights change. You can learn more about our history and impact here.

A core element of our work is capacity building and advocacy support: we provide human rights defenders with practical and expert training, information, strategic advice and advocacy support, enabling them to use international and regional human rights mechanisms to achieve change on the ground.

Until the creation of the ISHR Academy, all of this was done through face-to-face training and the long-term partnerships developed that way. This meant that only a limited number of advocates could benefit from ISHR’s 35 years of regional and international advocacy experience.

The ISHR Academy

The ISHR Academy aims to expand the reach and impact of ISHR’s capacity-building and expertise, so that any defender around the globe can benefit from our knowledge of strategic advocacy.

It shares essential information, insider tips, stories of success and moments for reflection to help human rights defenders engage more effectively with human rights mechanisms, giving you new tools to improve the situation in your country or region.

Aiming to provide a tool that is as accessible and secure as possible, the ISHR Academy will continue to grow and develop over time: gaining new stories from defenders, focusing on specific themes, and increasing the resources in our collection.
